New ACPA Board Member - Brian Tsang

Brian Tsang, MSc PChem has been a member of the ACPA since the mid 2000s. He was also a member of APEGA but let’s not hold that against him. He has served as a member of the ACPA Registration Committee since circa 2013. Brian has served as Chair of the ACPA Governance Committee since its inception in 2020. The committee was tasked with preparing the first publishing of the ACPA Governance Manual. Brian is the recipient of the 2024 Frank Bachelor Award for Service to the Chemical Profession. 
Brian received his BSc in chemistry in 1995 and MSc in geochemistry in 1998 from University of Calgary. He began his career as a geochemist with the Geological Survey of Canada before moving to Massachusetts and Connecticut working as an environmental geologist on contaminated site assessment and remediation projects. Brian returned home with his young family and continued his career as a hydrogeologist at an environmental consultancy. His role including leading projects for site assessment and remediation; water supply evaluation for industrial, commercial, municipal, and residential developments; regulatory compliance; and greenhouse gas management. Brian eventually joined Canada’s oldest oil sands mining company and worked on the file for permitting, operating, closing and reclaiming mining waste and tailings ponds.  

Meanwhile, Brian is passionate about volunteering and has spent many hours supporting the Calgary Food Bank, Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter (now called Fear Is Not Love), judging at the Calgary Youth Science Fair, and serving as board member and later President of a Calgary-based private school board. 

Brian left his career in hydrogeology to explore horticulture in 2019. He dabbled in oenology and terroir before eventually starting an indoor vertical hydroponic farming company. He is now officially retired and spends his time traveling, golfing, and playing tennis when not pursuing opportunities volunteering for non-profit organizations and their boards.
