Life as Chemistry Entrepreneurs – a Reality Check
Making the decision to strike out on your own and hang your shingle is both as great and challenging as it is said to be. You have full control over the company vision, product offering and internal corporate workings, but you also have to wear all the hats, and have full responsibility to keep the operation viable and employees happily paid. If you’re really good, you might eventually be able to pay yourself!
Kathy Janzen and Ken Schmidt, of Wilson Analytical Services Inc., and John Crabtree, of HJC Consulting Inc., founded their own companies, and have worked together on several projects over the last decade. Wilson Analytical builds sensitive, robust spectroscopy-based analytical instruments, and HJC Consulting focuses on microfluidics-based product development. In their talk, they will tell their own professional stories, the nature of their companies and how they were founded. They will also discuss the different business successes and challenges encountered at a product-based company like Wilson Analytical, and at a service-based company like HJC Consulting.
