Life as Chemistry Entrepreneurs – a Reality Check
Making the decision to strike out on your own and hang your shingle is both as great and challenging as it is said to be. You have full control over the company vision, product offering and internal corporate workings, but you also have to wear all the hats, and have full responsibility to keep the operation viable and employees happily paid. If you’re really good, you might eventually be able to pay yourself!
Kathy Janzen and Ken Schmidt, of Wilson Analytical Services Inc., and John Crabtree, of HJC Consulting Inc., founded their own companies, and have worked together on several projects over the last decade. Wilson Analytical builds sensitive, robust spectroscopy-based analytical instruments, and HJC Consulting focuses on microfluidics-based product development. In their talk, they will tell their own professional stories, the nature of their companies and how they were founded. They will also discuss the different business successes and challenges encountered at a product-based company like Wilson Analytical, and at a service-based company like HJC Consulting.
Kathy Janzen B.Sc., P.Chem., Vice-President and Founder of Wilson Analytical
Kathy Janzen is a Professional Chemist with 25 years of experience with the RCMP as a forensic scientist. She worked with entrepreneurs at the Northern Alberta Business Incubator (NABI) and then as the part-time executive director for the ACPA for the last decade before retiring this summer to concentrate her efforts full time on Wilson Analytical.
Ken Schmidt Ph.D., P.Chem., President and Founder of Wilson Analytical
Ken Schmidt completed his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Calgary, and over the last 32 years has worked with universities and the mining and energy industries to solve industry specific problems in sulfur chemistry, catalysis, ceramics, chemical vapour deposition (CVD) coatings, spectroscopy and instrumentation.
John Crabtree Ph.D., P.Chem., PMP, President and Founder of HJC Consulting.
John Crabtree is a microfluidics and analytical chemistry consultant. He earned his doctorate at the University of Alberta, and has been doing analytical chemistry-based product development for over 30 years in industry and acadaemia. He founded HJC Consulting Inc. in 2012, and has since been involved in dozens of projects with clients ranging from start-ups to multinationals, mostly focussed on technical product development, business development and IP landscaping.
