I Am A Chemist: Sara Schneidmiller

Name: Sara Schneidmiller, PhD, PChem

Education and Training

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Chemistry from the University of Victoria, where I also participated in the Co-op program and completed work terms in three different laboratories. I later earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Chemistry, specializing in Physical Chemistry, from the University of Calgary.

What Inspired Me to Pursue Chemistry

My strongest course in my first year of university was Chemistry 101, and that early success inspired me to continue down that path. I’ve been passionate about chemistry ever since.

Career Journey

Over the past ten years, I have technically worked at three different companies—without ever leaving the same office. This experience has given me continuity while allowing me to grow and adapt alongside an evolving organization.

Current Role

I am currently a Lead Chemist within the Production Chemical Technology division at SLB Canada Ltd., with a focus on the Flow Assurance product line.

In this role, I serve as a key technical partner to both our internal commercial group and our external customers.

Key Lessons Learned

Come to work with honesty, integrity, and authenticity.

Advice for Aspiring Chemists

When I graduated from university, I had no idea that the job I’m doing today even existed. My advice is to stay open to new experiences and to be constantly learning.

Experience with ACPA and the PChem Designation

The PChem designation is important to me because it represents recognition that I have met the requirements to operate as a professional chemist in Alberta. There are very few professional chemists in my industry, which makes it a unique and meaningful title. It often sparks interest and discussion, giving me the opportunity to talk about the intent and importance of ACPA in Alberta. ACPA also provides a place to connect with like-minded chemists who take their roles and responsibilities for maintaining good chemical practice seriously.
