Seminar Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) models have been used in decision making for many years; however, the advancements in technology and data have made it possible for these models to be more accurate and reliable than ever before. For an AI model to be useful in decision making, it must have a good understanding of our knowledge streams such as science, technology, traditional knowledge, and the rules of human society. This includes understanding the context in which a particular decision is being made, as well as the values and preferences of the people involved. An AI model that is able to understand these knowledge streams is more likely to provide sound advice and make decisions that align with human values.

One of the key challenges in using AI models in decision making is ensuring that the model outputs are unbiased and trustworthy. This requires the model to be transparent and explainable, so that humans can understand how the model arrived at a particular decision. Additionally, the model should be able to provide evidence to support its decisions, so that humans can evaluate the validity of the model's output. The use of AI models in decision making is becoming increasingly common in many areas including environmental management. For example, AI models have been used to understand the complex causal relationship of health impacts and environmental factors.

The use of AI models in decision making has the potential to greatly improve the accuracy and efficiency of decision making. However, it is important that these models are aligned with human values and provide sound advice. This presentation will provide examples of AI models used to inform environmental management and explore approaches for responsible use of AI models in decision making.

Dr. Long Fu, Ph.D., Manager, Standards Development, Science, Evaluation and Reporting Branch at Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development

Dr. Long Fu joined the Department in 1994 and was involved in the development of CASA PM and Ozone Management Framework as the Policy Lead. The tiered approach used in the PM and Ozone Management Framework has been adopted by regional environmental management frameworks and the National Air Quality Management System. Dr. Fu represented the Department on several national and provincial environmental policy committees, and he led the Standards and Quality program and the Environmental Health program for the Department.

Dr. Long Fu received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Physical Chemistry in 1987. He worked at the University of Alberta, Chemical Engineering Department for four years and received two US patents on air pollution control and new chemical synthesis processes. He holds an adjunct position with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Alberta.
