Welcome to the ACPA Seminar Series, a monthly webinar series including various topics of interest related to advancing the Chemical Profession in Alberta. For the next seminar in this series, we are happy to introduce Chris Swyngedouw, ACPA Executive Director, for 'The Professional Chemist in Alberta' on January 27, 2026. Chris Swyngedouw, ACPA Executive Director
Chris Swyngedouw is a retired professional chemist based in Calgary, deeply involved with the Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta (ACPA) and serves now as their Executive Director. With career spanning research, laboratory work, R&D, environmental specialization, lab management, consulting, technology transfer, and group technology leadership, Chris brings a wealth of experience from both technical and academic committee and board service. His broad expertise and insight continue to support the ACPA’s growth and direction in the coming years

This presentation explores the evolving role of the Professional Chemist in Alberta, emphasizing the impact of chemistry on industry, environment, and daily life. It highlights the significance of the Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta (ACPA) in setting standards, ethical conduct, and public safety through professional regulation. The presentation details the pathways to membership, the importance of continuous learning, and the benefits of membership, including networking, professional development, and recognition. It also briefly explains the Alberta Professional Governance Act and its implications for Professional Regulatory Organizations’ self-governance and public trust. By outlining the collaboration between provincial and national organizations, the presentation underscores the value of regulated practice, labour mobility, and ethical standards in fostering a competent and credible chemical profession across the province and Canada.
