Welcome to the ACPA Seminar Series, a monthly webinar series including various topics of interest related to advancing the Chemical Profession in Alberta. For the next seminar in this series, we are happy to introduce Dr. Robin Hamilton for 'On-Demand Hydrogen Production by Catalytic Water Splitting' on April 23, 2024. Each seminar will be eligible for 1 PDC credit.

Dark Matter Materials was founded in 2023 to commercialize proprietary technologies for catalytic water gasification, thus producing hydrogen directly without the need for electricity or sunlight, and without the co-generation of greenhouse gases. This innovation delivers energy-efficient carbonization and catalytic gasification of industrial process waters, yielding carbon-free dry tailings and hydrogen. As added innovation, the processes can be operated independently or in tandem. Catalytic thermal generation of hydrogen from water offers a paradigm-changing technology for on-demand production of hydrogen at any scale and in any location, on-or-off the grid, day-or-night, starting from unpurified water and an earth-abundant metal catalyst, comprising hetero- or tri-transition metal composites.

Speaker

Dr. Robin Hamilton

Dr. Robin Hamilton is the Chief Technology Officer for Dark Matter Materials, with more than 20-years experience in catalyst development and over 15-years experience leading and supervising research and development in organometallic, inorganic, and organic chemistry, synthesis and mechanism, homogeneous, heterogeneous, and electrochemical catalysis, solution kinetics, computational theory, and materials science. Previously Dr. Hamilton was a Senior Research Associate and Co-director of the Stryker Group at the University of Alberta for water gasification and bitumen upcycling programs, electrocatalytic conversion of bitumen asphaltenes, and lignin value-added materials. Dr. Hamilton obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Lakehead University, and Ph.D. from the University of Alberta.
