Welcome to the ACPA Seminar Series, a monthly webinar series including various topics of interest related to advancing the Chemical Profession in Alberta. For the next seminar in this series, we are happy to introduce Paolo Bomben Director of Bitumen Beyond Combustion at Alberta Innovates for 'How Materials Chemistry will Enable Albert's Energy Industry for Continued Success in 2040 and Beyond' on September 17, 2024. Each seminar will be eligible for 1 PDC credit.
Agenda
6:45 PM MT - Networking
7:00 PM MT - Seminar
Speaker
Paolo Bomben, Director of Bitumen Beyond Combustion at Alberta Innovates
Paolo Bomben is the Director, Bitumen Beyond Combustion at Alberta Innovates. The Bitumen Beyond Combustion program is developing innovative technologies for transforming bitumen into non-combustion products such as asphalt binder, carbon fibre, activated carbon, and carbon nanomaterials. Increasing the output of non-combustion products derived from Alberta oil sands bitumen can drive greater revenue from Alberta’s oil and gas resources, while reducing end use emissions. Paolo is also the program manager for the Carbon Fibre Grand Challenge. Before joining Alberta Innovates, Paolo spent time in sustainability consulting performing GHG quantifications, and as a research scientist performing catalyst development for a water electrolysis startup. Paolo has an undergraduate degree in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Windsor, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Calgary.
Seminar
New technologies are required to help reduce emissions and achieve net-zero along the energy supply chain (e.g. resource extraction, transportation, treatment, and end use). Alberta Innovates supports innovators along the supply chain in various focus areas (e.g. Cleaner Hydrocarbon Production, Innovative Hydrocarbon Products, Hydrogen, CCUS, Critical Minerals, etc.). In 2016 Alberta Innovates launched the Bitumen Beyond Combustion program with the goal of increasing the non-combustion material output from a barrel of bitumen. Achieving this objective requires the transformation of bitumen into carbon products such as asphalt, carbon fibre, activated carbon, hard carbon, graphene, etc.. Developing new materials with defined end use properties is the domain of chemists but it is increasingly challenging when starting from a mixture of unique organic molecules as in the case of bitumen.
This presentation will cover the importance of new materials to solving net zero challenges and dive deeper into the bitumen beyond combustion program and how chemists can help to transform the many molecules of bitumen into materials the world needs now and well into a net-zero future.
