Introducing the new ACPA Seminar Series, a monthly webinar series including various topics of interest related to advancing the Chemical Profession in Alberta. For the eleventh seminar in this series, we are happy to introduce Dr. Long Fu, Resource Manager of Resource Stewardship Division of Alberta Environment and Parks to speak on 'An Assessment of Industry SO2 Emission Reduction Effort Using Artificial Intelligence' on May 17, 2022.  Each seminar will be eligible for 1 PDC credit.

Agenda

6:45 - 6:59 PM MT - Networking
7:00 - 8:00 PM MT - Presentation and Q&A

An Assessment of Industry SO2 Emission Reduction Effort Using Artificial Intelligence

The performance of credible public policy is measured by whether the implementation of the policy achieves the desired outcomes or policy objectives. However, the challenge for such metrics is the impact of complex causal relationships and scientific uncertainties. SO2 emission reduction for Oil Sands facilities is a recent example of such challenges.

A recent study at the University of Alberta explored the use of artificial intelligence to assess the effect of government SO2 emission reduction policies to and ambient air quality. This presentation will use ambient air quality data analysis to demonstrate how government policies influenced industry operations and their environmental performance. The presentation will also discuss the distinction between the ways in which government policy and meteorological conditions influence ambient air quality.
