Internal Committees

Many members of the ACPA volunteer their time to work on internal committees for the benefit of our association, chemists across the province and society at large. Thank you all!

Discipline Committee

Purpose

Discipline Committee members hear and determine matters related to alleged professional misconduct or incompetence. The parties to a hearing are the ACPA and the member who is the subject of the complaint.

Scope

It is the responsibility of the Discipline Committee to determine whether the member in question is guilty of professional misconduct or incompetence and, if so, to determine and impose a penalty. The penalty may include but is not limited to one or more of the following:

  • Revoking a member's certificate
  • Suspending a member for a given period of time
  • Imposing specific terms, limitations or conditions upon a member's license to practice
  • Reprimanding, admonishing or counselling the member
  • Fining the member
  • Publishing the findings in a manner considered appropriate
  • Fixing costs to be paid by the member
  • Requiring the successful completion of a course of study
  • Fixing a period during which the member is ineligible for reinstatement or variation of the committee's order

Registration Committee

Purpose

The Registration Committee is responsible for all aspects of ACPA registration, but the primary focus is on certifying new members of the ACPA.

Scope

It is the responsibility of this committee to determine whether the applicant meets the criteria for membership required by the Professional Chemists Regulation. The committee also disseminates information to chemists who are already certified and to those who plan to become certified.

Some of the duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Reviewing applications for membership in the ACPA
  • Maintaining committee records of discussions about applicants
  • Register appropriate applicants for membership within the ACPA

Awards Committee

The Awards Committee organizes and administers the various awards, scholarships and science fair prizes of the ACPA.

Legislative Committee

Purpose

The Legislative Committee focuses on policy and regulatory issues. This committee requires a broad-based view of local, provincial and federal policies and works with members of each government level as required.

Scope

The Legislative Committee meets as needed and updates the ACPA Board of Directors monthly. ACPA policies and objectives are reviewed at these meetings, and future legislation involving ACPA is examined and developed as needed. When more intense legislative activity is required, regular conference calls are held.

Marketing Committee

Purpose

The Marketing Committee is tasked with increasing the visibility of the ACPA in academic, government and industrial settings. The committee's activities should help to recruit and maintain membership and to raise the profile of the professional chemist.

Scope

The Marketing Committee works with the Executive Director to develop a marketing plan and marketing materials. The committee members may plan presentations and other activities which highlight the benefits of becoming a member and the importance of the chemical profession.

Strategic Planning Committee

Purpose

The Strategic Planning Committee leads development of a strategic plan for the ACPA.  The strategic plan will look multiple years into the future and give our association a roadmap for the coming years.

Scope

The committee’s work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Crafting questions for a member survey and reviewing responses from the survey
  • Conducting relevant related research
  • Developing a draft strategic plan for consideration by the board of directors

Technical Seminar Committee

Purpose

The Technical Seminar Committee develops and organizes ACPA-sponsored educational opportunities for technically oriented personnel in the chemical industry. The members of this committee are drawn from a number of companies, bring unique talents, and work together for excellence.

Scope

The scope of the Technical Seminar Committee includes the following:

  • Identifying topics for one-time educational opportunities or for continuous education
  • Recruiting speakers and instructors
  • Assisting with the implementation of programs
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of educational programs
  • Providing detailed outlines for the content of each opportunity (as appropriate)
