Meet the Board – Alsayed Mostafa

I am Alsayed Mostafa, Ph.D., P.Chem., a multidisciplinary environmental and biochemical scientist and
Professional Chemist with a strong foundation in chemistry (B.Sc., M.Sc.) and a Ph.D. in Environmental
Engineering. I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and project lead in the Biorefinery conversion
and fermentation laboratory at the University of Alberta, where I develop and scale applied waste-to-value
solutions that bridge rigorous scientific practice with real-world implementation. Specifically, I am leading
the Lab’s work under the Alberta Biojet Initiative to evaluate diversion and circular-economy pathways for
spent oil by converting it to bio-jet fuel.

Across my academic and industrial experience, I have led bench- to pilot-scale process development, supported operations within active treatment sites, and collaborated with industry and municipal stakeholders. I have authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications (38+) and technical reports in areas such as biogas upgrading, nutrient recovery, emerging pollutants, and process optimization. My career includes more than 10 years of experience in eco-systems building, across Canada, the USA, Egypt, and South Korea. I earned my Ph.D. in early 2022 from Inha University (South Korea), where I also served as a postdoctoral fellow. Before moving to Canada, I completed postdoctoral research at the State University of New York (USA).


Alongside my technical leadership, I am active in service and governance. I currently serve as Vice President (External) of the University of Alberta Postdoctoral Fellows Association (PDFA), supporting stakeholder engagement and advocacy, and I also serve as a Member-at-Large with the Canadian Association of Postdoctoral Scholars, representing and advocating for more than 15,000 postdoctoral researchers nationwide. In these roles, I help connect diverse professional communities to ensure the postdoctoral experience in Canada is grounded in meaningful learning, growth, and capacity building.

I am motivated by governance that protects the public and strengthens the profession. If elected to the ACPA Board, I will bring a practical, evidence-based perspective, collaborative leadership, and a strong commitment to ethical practice, public safety, and continuous improvement. I will also strongly advocate for chemists across the province to ensure the profession receives the recognition and respect it deserves.
