
I’ve always been fascinated by how nature works on a microscopic level. But it was crossing paths with John Callegari, a high school teacher who masterfully tied complex chemistry to everyday life that made me want to study it at a higher level. That curiosity led me to pursue a B.Sc. in Chemistry. To be fair, university almost cured me of that enthusiasm. Between gruelling late-night labs and sleep-deprived morning seminars, my schedule consisted of equal parts intense studying and taking scheduled breaks to question my entire life path. What saved me was a collaborative learning community – my study groups, close friends, and university mentors like Patrick Kamau and Vladmir Pitchko. That degree taught me far less about memorizing formulas than it did about grit and resilience, and those traits have stuck with me ever since.
I began my career where many chemists do: in an analytical lab, swimming in an oversized white coat, and peering through prescription safety goggles. Most days were spent squinting at a screen trying to decide whether a bump in the data was a real chromatographic peak or just noise, alongside the steadier work of crunching large datasets and improving procedures/processes. That work taught me to diagnose, troubleshoot, and solve problems at the deepest level of a process. The real turning point came when a third-party consultant watched me break down a complex chemical anomaly for a non-technical visitor and said, “You need to be on the business side.” They were right. I loved the moment science stopped being abstract and became something a person could actually use, and that one piece of advice rerouted my entire trajectory, letting me pair an analytical brain with a genuine desire to help people.
As a sales professional, I built on my foundation in instrumentation and process automation to eventually lead an inside sales team and drive long-term revenue growth. From there, I moved into business development with a major OEM, breaking into emerging markets and cultivating strategic partnerships. Each role offered a different vantage point on the industrial landscape and each one proved, again, the value of a scientific background. That’s become my through line: deconstructing complex, abstract technical challenges into structured, profitable solutions. I’m driven by a genuine curiosity to solve a client’s actual problem, not just sell around it – uncovering hidden market potential and building pipeline that turns complexity into revenue that means something.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned: a chemistry background is a hidden advantage everywhere. My years at the bench sharpened my systems thinking, critical evaluation, and data analysis. Today, I use that exact same toolkit in a different context, which, it turns out, is an essential skill for navigating the chaotic, unpredictable world of modern sales.
To those just starting out: be curious, stay tenacious, and never stop learning. Build your network, volunteer, and have fun along the way. Chemistry opens doors in the most unexpected places; you just must be willing to put down the beaker and walk through them.
To me, holding the P.Chem. designation is a commitment to accountability, continuous professional development, and uncompromising ethical judgment in the public interest. In practice, it does something simpler too: it builds instant credibility and trust with clients, signalling that my priority is delivering solutions that genuinely serve their needs, not just my quota.
