My Journey as a Professional Chemist in Alberta
Coming to a new country in search of a better life is never easy—and finding a professional job is even harder. Becoming a Professional Chemist in a respected utilities company felt almost unimaginable at first. But ACPA helped turn that possibility into reality.
I moved from China to Canada 25 years ago, filled with excitement and hope. That excitement didn’t last long. I quickly realized how difficult the road ahead would be: limited English, a lack of professional connections, and credentials that weren’t recognized. My future felt uncertain.
Where was I supposed to begin?
An unexpected moment changed everything. I noticed a stamp on a research report—an official ACPA Professional Chemist stamp with a membership number. That discovery sparked something in me, and I immediately reached out to ACPA.
What followed was life‑changing:
- I submitted my background and qualifications. ACPA reviewed them and granted me the Professional Chemist (P. Chem.) designation.
- P. Chem. is more than a title — it is recognition, credibility, and the validation of my education and experience. It brought my past training “back to life.”
- With my P. Chem., I applied for a chemist position at a utilities company, got the job, and have now been there for over 20 years.
- I learned that ACPA is more than a social organization. It is a community of chemists dedicated to public health, safety, and the environment. Their professionalism, integrity, and commitment set a standard that inspired me deeply.
- The network I built—chemists across many different fields—is invaluable and cannot be replaced by any other social group.
- Encouraged by the professionals I met, I joined ACPA’s Board of Directors and served as Treasurer and President. These roles strengthened my leadership skills: coordinating teams, chairing meetings, setting organizational vision, resolving difficult issues, delegating, recognizing others, and communicating effectively. ACPA became the best platform for my career development.
- I used to be very shy. Through ACPA training and experience, I stepped out of my comfort zone, thought creatively, and took on new challenges. At work, I became more confident in leading projects and taking on both technical and managerial responsibilities.
- Understanding how much ACPA helped me grow, I also became involved in other chemistry-related organizations—such as the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation and Standard Methods review committees—to give back to the profession.
Without ACPA and the support of fellow P. Chems, I cannot imagine how far I would have come in my career. ACPA unlocked my potential—and I truly believe it can unlock yours too.
