The ACPA Board of Directors has been very active in assuring Chemist's gain the right to sign-off or manage environmental work in Alberta at a level equal in recognition to an APEGGA or AIA member.
Over the past several
months ACPA Board representatives have participated in an Alberta Environment
run committee focused on the remediation and reclamation business sector.
The objective of the committee was to identify all tasks a professional and/or
technologist might perform in the course of providing environmental
services. A set of competencies a practitioner should have in performing
these tasks is also described. The attached Draft Table provides further
context in this regard.
The Competencies Table is to be referred to by
the Alberta Government when "Environmental Specialist" is defined and "Sign-Off"
criteria is established. The Competencies Table is intended to be the
building block for Alberta Environment for detailing what a professional must
have in order to "Sign-Off" environmental work or reports. It is
anticipated the right to sign-off may be given through legislation.
To
that end the Committee's Draft Competencies Table is attached along with a
comment form. We encourage you to review the Table with respect to your
education, training and work experience and provide relevant comments or
recommendations.

Membership Contact
Listing
A membership contact list is now available as a benefit to ACPA members in good standing. The list is for networking purposes only. It is not a marketing list, so please use in a professional and ethical manner, e.g. no spamming and not for further distribution. The contact listing will be sent to members separate from this newsletter. Updated lists will be provided periodically.
Job
Postings
Job seekers, check out the pchem.ca website regularly to see the latest up-to-date job postings. Employers, if your organization has an opening that may be of interest to chemists, you may send your job posting to the ACPA Webmaster.
Laboratory Safety
Workshop
Escalade Training is
the Canadian representative of the Laboratory Safety Institute (LSI). LSI
is one of the organizations listed in the Chemical Safety section of the ACPA
website.
We are bringing LSI’s 2-day
Laboratory Safety Workshop to Calgary on March 1-2, 2006. Details and
registration information are included in the attached PDF. An “early bird”
registration discount is available for registrations received by January
26.
Professional Liability Insurance
The ACPA's application for Group Professional Liability Insurance (aka Errors and Omissions Insurance) policy was rejected because our estimate that 10 members would participate was too low.
There was a suggestion that we could have a combined policy with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists. Some chemists may do things that are similar to what biologists do but for others there is very little overlap so it was decided by the insurance provider (ENCON) that this approach would not give the cover that our members require.
The broker and ENCON are at least aware that ACPA exists and encourage individual members to discuss their insurance needs with them. ACPA membership should make it easier to obtain insurance cover and in one year's time ENCON will review how many members have policies with them. However, ENCON have indicated that they would require 20 to 30 members to participate in order to set up a group plan.
To
achieve this level of participation they would be willing to consider a joint
plan with ACPA and ACPO (the Association of the Chemical Profession
of Ontario) and I will contact ACPO to see if they are interested in
participating.
Members who need insurance should contact the broker and indicate
that they are an ACPA Member. You can contact them directly

Should you take out a policy through Morris and MacKenzie it would be helpful if you could let ACPA know (acpaoffice@pchem.ca) so that we have an idea of how many members are participating.
