The Chemical Institute of Canada Thanks ACPA

The ACPA recently received a warm letter of thanks from the Edmonton Section
of the Chemical Institute of Canada. This was for our donation of $300
towards their "Mall Science" activities that were held in October of 2004.
These hands-on chemistry displays in shopping malls are organized and
staffed by volunteers from the Edmonton CIC to promote National Chemistry
Week (NCW). According to their Chair Ken Schmidt and their NCW Coordinator
Ian Phillips, our donation helped 600 to 700 children to experience
first-hand the excitement and the wonder of chemistry.

NCW is a nation-wide annual event organized by the CIC to bring the message
to the public that chemistry is everywhere, and that chemistry is vital to
our future (see
http://www.cheminst.ca/ncw/Default.htm). A full report on
Edmonton's NCW Mall Science for 2004 is posted at
http://www.cicedmonton.org/INFOCHEM_files/NCWrev.pdf.

ACPA Science Fair Award in Edmonton

The "ACPA Professional Chemists Award" for best project in the field of
chemistry (Junior Level) at the 2005 Edmonton Regional Science Fair was
announced at NAIT on April 10. The prize went to Iain Bauer and Taylor
Bronstein (Sir George Simpson Junior High School, St. Albert) for their
project "What's in our Food?" They analyzed several common fast foods to see
if the nutritional content actually matched the published values. (The
conclusion: it sometimes does.) Their award plaques and cheques were
presented by ACPA board member Stan Backs, P.Chem. An Honourable Mention
certificate went to Jessica Moloney (W.D. Cuts Junior High School, St.
Albert) for her project "The Salsa Solution". Photos are attached of the
young scientists and their winning projects. More information about this
year's Edmonton Regional Science Fair is posted on their website at
http://www.ersf.ca/.
