Chemist’s Ring Design

At the last Annual General Meeting (AGM) a proposal for a Chemist’s Ring received the support of the majority of members who attended. Your opinions regarding the design/symbols that should be present on the ring, who receives the ring, and other meanings behind such selections are requested. Please see the attached file << Chemists Ring Design 2005.pdf” for more information.

Edmonton Chapter of the Chemical Institute of Canada Presents “The Chemistry of Titan Revealed”

The Edmonton Local Section of the Chemical Institute of Canada is pleased to announce Dr. Robert Hilts (Grant MacEwan College) will present lecture on "The Chemistry of Titan Revealed"

Date: Wed. Nov. 16th

Place: Grant MacEwan College - CN Theatre (Room 5-142) Easternmost building of the downtown campus (1st floor)

Time: Refreshments at 7:00pm; Lecture at 7:30pm

This is an invitation to take a break from your hectic schedule and join us for a presentation on Saturn's moon Titan. Titan has elicited great excitement ever since it was found to possess a thick atmosphere similar to that on Earth. This raises the exciting possibility that complex biomolecules may exist on Titan's surface. Come and discover how recent findings have changed our understanding of the chemical processes that occur in the atmosphere, on the surface and in the crust of Saturn's enigmatic moon Titan.  You will have an opportunity to view the natural beauty of our cosmos through the many striking radar and infra-red images snapped by the Cassini spacecraft and the Huygen probe. So whether you know a little or a lot about Titan come join Dr. Robert Hilts for this stunning presentation in which the chemistry of Titan will be revealed.

In order to prepare food and space, we need the approximate number attending, so if you think you will be able to join us for this event, please RSVP to GelminiL@macewan.ca.

APEGGA Kills Inclusivity Initiative

The APEGGA council has recently announced that the aspect of their Inclusivity Initiative that would have impacted chemists is officially dead. What was being proposed was a new category of membership, being a ‘Registered’ Engineer, Geologist or Geophysicist, that would accommodate those in related professions, such as chemistry, who practice in areas that could be construed as engineering, geology or geophysics.

The original proposal stirred up great controversy amongst AGEGGA members, and it was put out for further consultation with the membership and consideration by a committee. The results of the review were published in a white paper, which can be viewed on APEGGA’s web site (www.apegga.com).  The white paper concluded  “ … the Inclusivity Consultation Group now believes that the category of Related Professions can be appropriately regulated through collaboration with our sister-association to which the practitioner should already belong.

Although this may be disappointing to some who saw opportunity in holding this new professional registration, this decision has many positive implications for the ACPA and other such professional organizations. Some possible benefits include better multi-disciplinary collaboration and better recognition of other professions.
