Notice to Chemists

The ACPA is currently involved in establishing our right as chemists to conduct environmental related work with respect to remediation and reclamation. If you perform these activities in any way please respond to John Banks at jbanks@matrix-solutions.com, indicate what general activities your work includes (laboratory analyst, environmental consultant, etc).

ACPA has representation in two committees, the first (Joint Practice Standard Committee) includes the 6 professional organizations (ACPA is one) who the Government of Alberta recognizes as qualified to conduct high level environmental work. The objective of this committee is to develop a "Environmental Practice Standard" for all 6 professional organizations that might parallel the APEGGA Building Code Practice Standard. This Environmental Practice Standard would be used by the separate professional organizations in the event of a discipline issue or challenge to determine an individuals qualifications in carrying out the work activity in question. Only ACPA would evaluate their own members (for instance APEGGA or AIA would not evaluate an ACPA member).

The second committee (Competencies for Upstream Oil and Gas Remediation and Reclamation Advisory Committee) is chaired and run by Alberta Environment in consort with Alberta Human Resources and Employment; the support department, Occupations and Professions also has a seat as do the six professional organizations and ASET (the technologist representation). This committee's objective is to develop a list of work activities or tasks for conducting remediation and reclamation in the oil and gas industry. Once that is completed we would determine what competencies an individual should have to perform that work (based on education, training and experience).

Once completed, the Alberta Government (in a follow-up committee) will determine which organizations will be given the right to "sign-off" remediation and reclamation work. This yet to be established committee will depend on recommendations made from the first two committees in assigning the right to "sign-off" to organizations (which would be equivalent to qualifying a professional to review reports not just write them). ACPA will hopefully be on that list.

A draft list of work activities for conducting environmental work has been completed. The ACPA asks it's membership who conduct work in the environmental field to contact John Banks by email, he will forward you a copy of this work list for your review and comment. We also encourage members representing chemistry departments of educational institutions to participate in the process.

Arthur Bollo-Kamara Scholarship

Regretfully, there were no qualifying candidates for the Arthur Bollo-Kamara scholarship this year.  Over the coming year, if any member has the opportunity to speak to university students, please promote the scholarship.

Errors and Omissions Insurance

ACPA is in the process of applying to be part of a group policy for errors and omissions insurance.  The Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, the College of Alberta Professional Foresters and the College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologists are also applying to participate in the same group policy.  When the policy is in place each profession will have its own application form and the rates will vary slightly from one profession to the next.  The advantage to ACPA members who require insurance will be a relatively straightforward application process because the scope of practice and risks involved will have already been evaluated.

On-line ACPA Membership Listing

ACPA is pleased to announce that our membership listing (without contact information) is now posted on our website at www.pchem.ca in the membership area.   The listing is provided as a service to Association members and to the public.  Now the membership and the public have a convenient way to check whether or not an individual is a member in good standing.
